Letter to parents -
Dear Parent(s) of a First Grade Penguin,
Hello, my name is Lauren Mokan. Welcome to one of the most incredible years your child will have in his/ her school career! First grade is an exciting time as children embark on new adventures in the world of learning. This is a year of important transitions, as well as acquiring new, life-long skills. First graders develop fundamental work habits, appropriate social behavior, problem solving, and decision making skills, and, of course, academic skills.
It is so important for you to develop healthy parental involvement habits now so it will benefit your child's future in the long run. I expect a lot out of each of my students, and I hope that you set your child to a higher standard as well. Here is a list of things to do at home daily to help your child be successful -
- Check their Take-Home Folder every night
- Complete any homework in the folder and read all notes that are sent home
- Clean out the folder daily
- Encourage your child to do their best and be their best
- Read with your child everyday
- Attend parent-teacher conferences
- Volunteer for class field trips and parties
- Call, e-mail or set up a meeting to discuss your child at anytime throughout the year
The students will notice your level of involvement because it is very important to them, too. By being involved you will aid their continued successes at home by helping them become lifelong learners.
In our penguin room, we have classroom expectations all first grade penguins follow. This is called our Penguin Promise.
Our Penguin Promise includes:
1. Whole Body Listening - I will sit Whole Body Listening.
2. Raised Hands - I will raise my hand to share my ideas.
3. Quiet Mouths - I will use a quiet voice.
4. Self-Control - I will show self-control.
5. Helping Hands - I will use my hands for helping and not hurting.
6. Caring Hearts - I will use kind words.
I reward students with behavior tickets for meeting their expectations and going above and beyond. Each week, students have the chance to earn behavior tickets for their exceptional behavior. The students accumulate tickets throughout the week, and if on Friday they have at least 3 tickets we spend 30 minutes having a "Fun Friday." Fun Friday includes fun games and stations that change weekly. Each week is a new week which means they have a fresh start to make changes to their behaviors.
If students decide not to follow their expectations then they will have to face the consequences of paying me a ticket. Their first notice of making poor choices is a warning, and from there they must hand me one of their behavior tickets. If they do not have any tickets to give they will owe me 2 minutes of recess.
This is a year full of exciting new things for your first grade penguin, and I cannot wait to get to know your child. I look forward to seeing some familiar faces and some new ones at the Open House on September 2, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. Please feel free to contact me before then if you have any questions.
With Love,
Miss Lauren Mokan
